In comparison, the Forerunner 45 and 45S are the same smartwatches if you count the components but the 45S is more suitable for those with smaller wrist or if you prefer a smaller watch because this is what sets the two apart.

Forerunner 45 and 45S Design

As you can see, both have the same type of fashion and the material to build the watch is also the same. For starters the glass is chemically strengthened but should work well against normal usage. The prominent difference is the size of the watch because the 45 is measured at 42 x 42 x 11.4 mm while the 45S is at 39.5 x 39.5 x 11.4mm. This is the size of the bezel but the screen itself is the same or 26.3 mm in diameter.

The display is not as wide as in the Forerunner 245 but should work well with the limited menu and for the resolution, the two are the same too at 208 x 208 pixels. The band length seems to be slightly shorter on the 45S but the width is the same. Now for the most important part, let’s see what Forerunner 45 and 45S can offer starting from the home menu. As it has been mentioned above, both watches are the same internally and the 45S is only physically smaller so the functionalities are identical. The watches have a face or the data that we always see on them and this can be customized only on the accent color so the information stays the same and in general it should be enough for simple users.

However, we can still download different watch faces to customize it and this is the only available option to let you tweak the appearance a little bit. Sadly these watches are not compatible with widgets from the Garmin IQ. The common built-in widgets are the same however such as heart rate, stress level, body battery or in general the health stats of your body. In higher smartwatches there is this option to use the device to control Garmin Virb but it is not available in these two.

Forerunner 45 and 45S Features

On the settings, you can find the rest of the Forerunner 45 and 45S features including the incident detection and Garmin assistance. You can also find a heart rate monitor below the smartwatch’s housing so both of them can monitor heart rate. The only feature missing in these affordable series is the ox pulse which functions to measure the saturation of oxygen in the bloodstream. It is detected using red and infrared lights with sensors on the back of the watch.
